Sad day in Argentina

While all of the censusing business was taking place on Wednesday, Nestor Kirchner, the husband of the current President of Argentina, passed away. They've been a power couple for many years; he was actually the former President himself, before Cristina was elected.

Today was named a National Day of Mourning, and the ex-President's casket traveled a route through the city before boarding a plane to his final resting place. Citizens and at least 3 crazy Americans swarmed the streets, waiting several hours in pouring rain to watch the procession. Handmade signs were posted everywhere, women were crying, and groups of college students were singing songs (the popular La Boca futbol team's song??!). There were literally so many people in the streets, you couldn't even see the casket. Quite a day for this country.

Speculation and uncertainty abound, because he was expected to run for President (again) in the election next October. This could mean a complete reorganization within the political parties and possibly instability in this shaky economy. Looking forward to seeing it all first-hand in next year.

Some of the signs along the route, they say things like: "Thank you for your passion" and "Forever Nestor."

This was two hours before the procession. The street was unrecognizable when it actually rode by.

This one says that Nestor is with Peron, the people are with Cristina (the President).
