Life Is Like A Box of Chocolates--Savannah

Savannah and Charleston have been on my U.S. list of must-sees for a while, especially after watching an episode or three of a tv show called "Southern Charm". I fully admit to watching some really heinous reality tv, but I do it for the travel potential. Mostly. Unfortunately, our long weekend was cut a day short due to Sean's last minute work trip to Colombia (the country, not the city) so Charleston will have to wait.

My first glimpse of live oaks dripping with Spanish moss was all it took for Savannah to win me over! The oldest city in Georgia is chock full of history and was so much fun to explore. We took the trolley tour around the different city sites and and ended up at Chippewa square, the location of one of Forrest Gump's most famous lines. We were surprised that no one was selling feathers.

Our tour continued through the most beautiful street in the city (which my camera didn't do justice) and to the riverfront, where we encountered the Olympic torch from Atlanta's 96 games. We saw typical architecture for homes in the area, like that of the home below. We learned that the double staircase entry (the stairs which extend to the left and right) was there so that women could climb a separate set of stairs in hoop skirts without men catching a glance at their exposed ankles. Scandalous!

In addition to hearing about the city's rich history, our tour guide pointed out the many places throughout the area where movies have been filmed. Teague was most impressed to see where parts of "The Swamp Thing Returns" were shot, but was disappointed that he couldn't see the actual swamp thing. I am not.

Savannah was so welcoming and had such a nice small town feel. Glad we were able to stop over and spend some time in Georgia.
