We've seen quite a bit of Colorado, and there's no denying it's a beautiful state. Even so, the tiny town of Ouray totally blew me away. It's far less flashy than Aspen or Steamboat Springs but the setting is simply stunning. Its famous Million Dollar Highway runs from Ouray to Silverton and is quite notorious for being both breathtaking and scary. A lesser known back trail (Engineer Pass) goes from Silverton to Ouray. It's more for off-road vehicles, so naturally Sean wanted to take us back that way in our Jeep. It had some truly awesome views:
Look mom, no guardrails!
Believe it or not, there were people running a race along Engineer Pass.
After a long day of bouncing our organs around in the Jeep, a trip to Ouray's Hot Springs was necessary. The springs are sulfur-free (way less smelly) and the view can't be beat! A little further up the road is the most adorable downtown. In the summer, each restaurant has outdoor seating, many with rooftop bars. I could have easily spent another day there perusing the little shops and watching the Jeeps and motorcycles coming and going.
They had water volleyball set up in a side pool which Teague played until he became a giant prune.
Ouray isn't commercialized and has just a few cabin-style lodging options. Ours was located next to the river and had a balcony hanging right over it! We lucked out with the cowboy themed rooms, too. Lasso ropes opened and closed our blinds and antlers framed the mirrors.
Weird view from the toilet; it had this creepy hall of mirrors thing going on.
